  • The ICTA Tennis Leagues are designed for competitive doubles tennis divided into four levels of play: Majors, A, B, and C.
  • Teams are generally grouped into geographically compatible areas
  • The ICTA runs the following Doubles Leagues: Mixed League, Ladies League, 55 Plus Leagues. There are doubles and singles in the Juniors’ league - Boys, Girls, and Mixed.
  • The season for most leagues runs for 14 weeks from the beginning of May to mid-August. Each division is usually made up of 8 teams. Most teams play two matches against each club, one at home and one away.

In most mixed leagues, at the end of the season, the bottom two teams in the Major, A and B leagues are relegated and the top two teams in the lower divisions are promoted. The Mixed League teams play on Tuesday and Thursday nights starting at 7:00. "Major" and "B" teams play on Tuesday nights and "A" and "C" teams play on Thursday nights. 12 players play on a team: eight men and four women. Agnes Kern receives Tennis Canada's Distinguished Service Award for her activities with the ICTA
Agnes Kern

Agnes Kern started playing tennis on a regular basis at the age of 31 when she and her family joined Brampton Tennis Club (BTC).  At that time, "Morning Ladies" was a developmental program for all levels and Agnes was invited to play on a Mixed Inter-County Tennis Association (ICTA) "B" team.  It was harder to break through on Ladies daytime tennis because the  BTC had only one  ICTA team comprised of the original seasoned players who inaugurated ICTA when there were only 2 team categories,  Major and A.  These seasoned players were very intimidating for a newcomer tennis player but a niche opened up when ICTA added B and C team categories.  Agnes was able to organize other frustrated competitive players and captained the first BTC ICTA "C" team.  The first year the team was promoted to "B" and this solidified her "yes you can" aspirations to play on ICTA teams and at 75, she is still playing ICTA.

Playing as a family at the Club level was especially rewarding and this was where  she and her husband's five children crafted their game before they went on to greater heights.  The children took lessons, played on ICTA teams and played OTA tournaments and quickly surpassed the parents. Daughter Kristine went on to capture Mixed doubles at the College level and semifinal Ladies at the University level and played in OTA "A" and "Open" Tournaments.  It was payback time when she played with Agnes to win the Club Parent Child Championship.  Agnes and her husband were proud when she won the Grand Slam in Brampton and then took off for University pursuits.

Agnes was then on her own and had to win our own glory in age group competition.  Last year, in the over 75 categories, Agnes and her partner won the Provincial Senior Actifest Tennis Championship in London.  She continues to compete in the senior games and on ICTA teams because they have programs that suit her age and level of ability.
Thirty years ago, Agnes became involved in the management of the ICTA. First serving as a Ladies Division Chairperson, she appreciated the effort involved in this volunteer organization.  After ten years as a Ladies Division Chairperson, she became the ICTA Vice President.  She would keep stats and could see how the ICTA continued to grow even when Tennis was on a downswing. The ICTA started with one Major division of 8 teams 45 years ago and now has about 300 teams.  In 1996, Agnes developed the +55 League and found the niche for herself and other seniors.  In 1998, she became the ICTA President and spent the next 6 years developing a web site for the ICTA.

As the ICTA Past President, the position of Juniors League Director was unfilled so she stepped in. Court availability for juniors is difficult at the Club level and the Saturday League required at least 3 courts and six players.  Some Clubs could not fill these requirements and others preferred their adults use the Saturday morning space.  So three years ago, Agnes added the Juniors Mixed League (World Team Tennis format) on Sundays that required only one court and 4 juniors.  It has proven an effective alternative and continues to flourish at a Major and A level.

Six years ago, she helped advance tennis in the Brampton Senior Games and the first year Brampton brought home 3 gold medals at the Kingston provincial level, Last year, she found her niche again as she and her partner won the Ladies Doubles at the Actifest Provincials in London in the 75 and over category.  Three senior gold teams from the 2008 Actifest tennis was recognized at the Brampton Sports award Ceremony on Feb 11, 2009.
Participation in tennis is the name of the game and the sport has proven to be safe and enduring for Agnes and her family as they continue to play at all levels of ability and through all the ages from grand kids to grandparents.
